The top ten Nintendo Switch games since launch

 Japanese gaming magazine Weekly Famitsu has been celebrating the Nintendo Switch’s fifth anniversary in its latest issue and has revealed the best-selling software in Japan since the March 2017 launch. The best-selling Nintendo Switch game so far is Animal Crossing: New Horizon which was not only a great game, but something fun to play during the COVID-19 pandemic when countries where in their respective lockdowns. 

   The second best-selling Nintendo Switch game is Super Smash Bros Ultimate which creator, Masahiro Sakurai, won a special award yesterday for Most Valuable Creator. Here’s the top ten best-selling Switch games since March 20217.

 

1. Animal Crossing : New Horizons – 7,183,333

 As in previous Animal Crossing games, New Horizons is a life simulation game played in real time. Weather also adjusts to the seasons of the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, depending on the player's real-world location, a first for the Animal Crossing series.

2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 4,764,379

  Super Smash Bros. is considered one of Nintendo's fighting game series with a long and storied history of over two decades. It stands as one of the most successful and top-rated fighting game series in the world, beloved by fans. The series remains popular and continues to achieve remarkable sales figures throughout its existence.

3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 4,429,626

  The Mario Kart series is one of Nintendo's most highly successful game series, with consistently strong sales in almost every installment. When a new Mario Kart game is announced, it immediately garners attention, even if it's not an entirely new game, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

4. Pokemon Sword / Shield – 4,309,812

    New Pokemon games always come with fresh sets of Pokemon, new gameplay mechanics, and new regions to explore. The game utilizes the Ring-Con accessory and leg strap to track and respond to the player's movements.

7. Momotaro Dentetsu : Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! – 2,597,078

  This game is a board game in which each player has to earn money by operating businesses related to trains, ships, and planes. In addition to competing against each other, players must also compete against formidable AI business competitors. The game's theme is based on a popular Japanese folklore character named "Momotaro," which has garnered a significant fan base in Japan. The game bears some resemblance to classic board games like Monopoly and Sugoroku.

8. Minecraft – 2,514,952

  This is a 3D game where characters can create 'cubical blocks' (referred to as cubes in the game) to build structures using materials like dirt, stone, sand, trees, minerals, water, and more. The game offers a high degree of freedom, allowing players to explore and build in the open world of Minecraft.

9. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl – 2,502,926

  It's not unusual for the Pokemon series to receive remakes because The Pokemon Company has a penchant for dusting off old classics and giving them a fresh coat of paint.
